Drinkwater: Feeling good

Having featured in our past three matches, Danny Drinkwater is hopeful of being involved when we entertain Manchester United on Sunday, but the midfielder’s main concern is that we secure the victory which would move us to within just one point of our opponents.
The Blues are aiming to record a third consecutive Premier League victory this weekend and maintain our impressive home record against the Red Devils, who have won once in their last 15 league visits to Stamford Bridge.
Drinkwater was on United’s books as a youngster and featured regularly for their youth and reserve sides, as well as being an unused substitute for the first team in their final league game of the 2008/09 season at Hull City.
Having been born in Manchester, Drinkwatergrew up as a United fan like many of his family, but that will count for nothing on Sunday, as he explains.
‘Yes, most of my family are Man United fans but that’s got nothing to do with the way I approach the game, every time I play against them I want to beat them,' Drinkwater says.
‘They might be United fans in my family but I’m sure, come the weekend, they’ll all be supporting Chelsea.’
Drinkwater, who signed for the Blues in August, endured a frustrating start to his Chelsea career when he picked up an injury shortly after arriving.
However, he made his first start for the club in our recent Carabao Cup win over Everton and was introduced off the bench in our last two games, against Roma and Bournemouth.
‘I’m feeling good and I’m getting there,’ says the midfielder. ‘I have to trust the manager’s plan and whether I’m involved on Sunday or not, the most important thing is that we get a result.
‘In terms of the football side it was hard because I picked up the injury early but other than that it’s a great football club, a great place and I’m happy to be a part of it.’
The midfielder is also enjoying playing under the guidance of Antonio Conte, and he is full of praise for the Italian’s work.
‘I’ve loved working with Antonio so far,’ he says. ‘His ability to read the opposition, and what they will try to do in a game, is fantastic. He’s definitely one of the best managers I’ve worked under.’
