OCT 18, 2013
This is an excerpt from the company handbook. “You will be assigned projects every now and then. A project is different from a task. A project is a collection of tasks that lead up to the achievement of a particular goal. Some of those tasks will require some tasks to be done before they can be proceeded with. Some can be done in parallel. To successfully achieve the goals of a project, you must be able to complete each of the tasks in the order they need to be completed, and you must be able to solve all additional problems that crop up as you solve those tasks, People who aspire to become team leaders or managers are going have to first of all demonstrate that they can effectively complete projects. The primary skill you will need in order to complete any project is the ability to FIND THE ANSWER. When you start a project, you are the expert on this project. Nobody knows more about this project than you. So when you hit a roadblock, your ability to proceed and complete the project is your ability to find an answer to the problem you are facing. To find the answer, you are going to have to search. Search online. Ask people around you for clues. Experiment in different ways. Look for how other people have solved similar problems. Send emails. Make phone calls. Search for the answer. What you should not do:
- Give up and wait for someone to query you on the project status
- Send an email to any superior officer reporting a problem and stop working on the project till you receive a reply
- Avoid the problem and start working on unrelated parts of the project
What you should do:
If you are consistently unable to find an answer that allows you achieve the goals of the project, then you will not be promoted to team leader.”
